Islamic world , also called Islamdom , the complex of societies and cultures in which Muslims and their faith have been prevalent and socially dominant. Adherence to Islam is a global phenomenon: Muslims predominate in some 30 to 40 countries, from the Atlantic eastward to the Pacific and along a belt that stretches across northern Africa into Central Asia and south to the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent.

Influenced by the political systems of these conquered areas, the leadership became hereditary, and the Umayyad dynasty — emerged out of the aristocracy of the Quraysh. While the Rashidun caliphs were based at Mecca and Medina, the Umayyads moved the seat of power to Damascus. The Arab conquests started as sporadic tribal raids. A proper army was probably not organized before , but once formed, it made expeditions eastwards towards the Sasanian empire and northwards to Palestine and Syria against the Byzantine empire. Constantinople was sporadically besieged during this period, though never captured. On the oriental front, the Sasanian army suffered a crushing defeat at the battle of al Qadisiyah , and Ctesiphon was taken soon afterwards; this caused the disintegration of the Sasanian empire. The city of Fustat was founded in , and northeast Africa was occupied.
The start of Islam is marked in the year , following the first revelation to the prophet Muhammad at the age of Muhammad and his followers spread the teachings of Islam throughout the Arabian peninsula. Soon after the death of the prophet Muhammad, there were military expeditions, called "futuhat," or literally "openings," into what is now Egypt and other parts of North Africa. In other parts of the world, Islam spread through trade and commerce. The following is a brief timeline that highlights some of the major occurrences in Islam's development, as well as the geographical spread of Islam to some of the countries featured in the film.
This study explores the historical determinants of the spread of Islam. We also show that Islam spread successfully in regions ecologically similar to the birthplace of the religion, the Arabian Peninsula, and discuss various mechanisms that may give rise to the observed pattern. For centuries the people of the Arabian Peninsula have possessed a strong identity based upon the tenets of Islam. Saudi Arabia is a modern nation that adheres to Islam, honors its Arab heritage and tradition, and presses vigorously forward in the service of Islam while securing the welfare of its people. Islam, one of the world's great monotheistic religions, has Saudi Arabia as its heartland. Today, the worldwide community of Muslims, which embraces the people of many races and cultures, numbers well over one billion. Historically, Saudi Arabia has occupied a special place in the Islamic world, for it is towards Makkah and Islam's most sacred shrine, the Ka'abah, located in the Holy Mosque there, that Muslims throughout the world turn devoutly in prayer five times a day. An appreciation of Islamic history and culture is therefore essential for a genuine understanding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its Islamic heritage and its leading role in the Arab and Muslim worlds. The Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, enclosing the place from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, completes the trio of venerated shrines in the Islamic world.

British Broadcasting Corporation Home. The Muslim community spread through the Middle East through conquest, and the resulting growth of the Muslim state provided the ground in which the recently revealed faith could take root and flourish. The Silk Roads are amongst some of the most important routes in our collective history. It was through these roads that relations between east and west were established, exposing diverse regions to different ideas and ways of life. After the advent of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7 th century, Islam started its expansion towards eastern regions through trade encouraged by the development of the maritime Silk Roads.
Some of the settled communities in the Arabian Peninsula developed into distinctive civilizations. Sources for these civilizations are not extensive, and are limited to archaeological evidence, accounts written outside of Arabia, and Arab oral traditions later recorded by Islamic scholars. Among the most prominent civilizations were Thamud, which arose around BCE and lasted to about CE, and Dilmun, which arose around the end of the fourth millennium and lasted to about CE. Additionally, from the beginning of the first millennium BCE, Southern Arabia was the home to a number of kingdoms, such as the Sabaean kingdom, and the coastal areas of Eastern Arabia were controlled by the Iranian Parthians and Sassanians from BCE.
The importance of studying the origins, beliefs, practices, and spread of religion is a matter of consensus because this subject has contemporary relevance.
Given its negotiated, practical approach to different cultural situations, it is perhaps more appropriate to consider Islam in Africa in terms of its multiple histories rather then as a unified movement. The first converts were the Sudanese merchants, followed by a few rulers and courtiers Ghana in the eleventh century and Mali in the thirteenth century. The masses of rural peasants, however, remained little touched. In the eleventh century, the Almoravid intervention , led by a group of Berber nomads who were strict observers of Islamic law, gave the conversion process a new momentum in the Ghana empire and beyond.
