But what is the Green New Deal and is it really a deal at all? The Green New Deal has quickly grabbed the headlines, but where did the idea come from and is it here to stay?

The 1 New York Times bestseller, fully updated and expanded in this paperback edition. Thomas L. Now Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energy—both of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively.

The Art Of The Green New Deal

Just over a year ago, "Hot, Flat and Crowded" was published in hardback. The book was an argument for why America's taking the lead in the green revolution was the ideal way to reinvigorate our economy and innovation engines, restore America's global leadership and help the planet at the same time. The book came out, alas, in the teeth of the financial crisis. Over the past year, that coincidence helped me to see how much this Great Recession was not only an economic crisis but also an environmental one. It was both the Market and Mother Nature telling us we need to grow in a different way. So for the paperback edition, the first chapter of which follows, I have rewritten most of the front of the book to underscore the parallels between the financial crisis and the environmental crisis.

On June 15, , as the global economy was booming, the satirical newspaper The Onion carried the following story about Chinese workers and all the stuff they make for Americans. Though a fake story, like many in The Onion it actually spoke some essential truths:.

The title derives from the convergence of Hot global warming , Flat globalization , as discussed in Friedman's book The World Is Flat and Crowded population growth. The book was released on September 8, , by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He advocates that global warming , rapidly growing populations, and the expansion of the global middle class are leading to a convergence of hot, flat, and crowded. He argues that the solution to the environmental threat and the best way for America to renew its purpose are linked: take the lead in a worldwide effort to replace wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation. This means that the big economic opportunities have shifted from IT Information Technology in recent decades to ET renewable Environmental Technologies.
