Mathematics

The area of study known as the history of mathematics is primarily an investigation into the origin of discoveries in mathematics and, to a lesser extent, an investigation into the mathematical methods and notation of the past. Before the modern age and the worldwide spread of knowledge, written examples of new mathematical developments have come to light only in a few locales. From BC the Mesopotamian states of Sumer , Akkad and Assyria , followed closely by Ancient Egypt and the Levantine state of Ebla began using arithmetic , algebra and geometry for purposes of taxation, commerce, trade and also in the patterns in nature , the field of astronomy and to record time and formulate calendars. The earliest mathematical texts available are from Mesopotamia and Egypt — Plimpton Babylonian c. All of these texts mention the so-called Pythagorean triples , so, by inference, the Pythagorean theorem seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry.

Historically, it was regarded as the science of quantity, whether of magnitudes as in geometry or of numbers as in arithmetic or of the generalization of these two fields as in algebra. Some have seen it in terms as simple as a search for patterns. During the 19th Century, however, mathematics broadened to encompass mathematical or symbolic logic, and thus came to be regarded increasingly as the science of relations or of drawing necessary conclusions although some see even this as too restrictive. The discipline of mathematics now covers — in addition to the more or less standard fields of number theory, algebra, geometry, analysis calculus , mathematical logic and set theory, and more applied mathematics such as probability theory and statistics — a bewildering array of specialized areas and fields of study, including group theory, order theory, knot theory, sheaf theory, topology, differential geometry, fractal geometry, graph theory, functional analysis, complex analysis, singularity theory, catastrophe theory, chaos theory, measure theory, model theory, category theory, control theory, game theory, complexity theory and many more. The history of mathematics is nearly as old as humanity itself.

The fact that the topics are introduced in their historical contexts will enable students to better appreciate and understand the mathematical ideas involved If one constructs a list of topics central to a history course, then they would closely resemble those chosen here. It is very stimulating and will be appreciated not only by students. Much attention is paid to problems and to the development of mathematics before the end of the nineteenth century This book brings to the non-specialist interested in mathematics many interesting results. It can be recommended for seminars and will be enjoyed by the broad mathematical community. The book is accessible to students that have already experienced calculus, algebra and geometry and will give them a good account of how the different branches of mathematics interact.

Mathematics , the science of structure, order, and relation that has evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring, and describing the shapes of objects. It deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation, and its development has involved an increasing degree of idealization and abstraction of its subject matter. Since the 17th century, mathematics has been an indispensable adjunct to the physical sciences and technology, and in more recent times it has assumed a similar role in the quantitative aspects of the life sciences. In many cultures—under the stimulus of the needs of practical pursuits, such as commerce and agriculture—mathematics has developed far beyond basic counting. This growth has been greatest in societies complex enough to sustain these activities and to provide leisure for contemplation and the opportunity to build on the achievements of earlier mathematicians. All mathematical systems for example, Euclidean geometry are combinations of sets of axioms and of theorems that can be logically deduced from the axioms. Inquiries into the logical and philosophical basis of mathematics reduce to questions of whether the axioms of a given system ensure its completeness and its consistency.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. This is the first book by a sociologist devoted exclusively to a general sociology of mathematics. The author provides examples of different ways of thinking about mathematics sociologically. The survey of mathematical traditions covers ancient China, the Arabic-Islamic world, India, and Europe. Following the leads of classical social theorists such as Emile Durkheim, Restivo develops the idea that mathematical concepts and ideas are collective representations, and that it is mathematical communities that create mathematics, not individual mathematicians. The implications of the sociology of mathematics, and especially of pure mathematics, for a sociology of mind are also explored.

Mathematics and Its History

Science has allowed mankind to make important achievements, a story that begins from the dawn of civilization to the present day Countless millennia ago, hunter-gatherer ancestors evidently experienced the compulsion to add, subtract and divide. This language was essentially mathematical even if inscribed on wood, bone or clay. Mathematical concepts can thus be said to have long preceded the evolution of writing.

Is mathematics a purely intellectual exercise isolated from social influences?
