Waves are everywhere.

In physics , mathematics , and related fields, a wave is a propagating dynamic disturbance change from equilibrium of one or more quantities, sometimes as described by a wave equation. In physical waves, at least two field quantities in the wave medium are involved. Waves can be periodic, in which case those quantities oscillate repeatedly about an equilibrium resting value at some frequency. When the entire waveform moves in one direction it is said to be a traveling wave ; by contrast, a pair of superimposed periodic waves traveling in opposite directions makes a standing wave.

Fundamentals of Waves and Oscillations

Waves are everywhere. On water of course, but also in the air as you hear a plane, and under your feet during an earthquake certainly. Vibrations, too, are everywhere In your bike as you go over a bump, in you guitar as you play, and of course in your smartphone. You can guess that there is something in common behind all this. This is exactly the purpose of this course!

So if you want to understand better waves and vibrations, and the relation between them and to use that knowledge in your field, this MOOC is for you. We are going to consider any possible domains of applications such as civil engineering, aerospace engineering, plant biomechanics, and many others! There are so many phenomena and so many models that we need to work with you on the basic mechanisms. We look forward to see you in the course, and work together!

How combining waves with boundary conditions leads to the existence of particular solutions, modes. The response of the oscillator to any type of forcing is explored, as a generic model of modal response. Using the knowledge on the oscillator dynamics from the previous week, the response of general systems is built by modal recomposition.

I really enjoyed this course which gave me a lot of insight on the nature of things around me. It is graphically pleasing with lots of exciting real world applications. The course provided me with a clear and concise insight about waves and vibrations. A must seek course for undergraduate as well as graduate students. Thank you Prof. Emmanueland his team for making the course easier to understand and use it in our daily lives. Hoping to read others courses as well.

It's a good course provided you're well equipped with the basics of the topic. It's very interesting as it has a few lab based teaching as well. Access to lectures and assignments depends on your type of enrollment. If you take a course in audit mode, you will be able to see most course materials for free. To access graded assignments and to earn a Certificate, you will need to purchase the Certificate experience, during or after your audit.

If you don't see the audit option:. When you purchase a Certificate you get access to all course materials, including graded assignments. Upon completing the course, your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile. If you only want to read and view the course content, you can audit the course for free.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. This textbook is intended for those second year undergraduates in science and engineering who will later need an understanding of electromagnetic theory and quantum mechanics. The classical physics of oscillations and waves is developed at a more advanced level than has been customary for the second year, providing a basis for the quantum mechanics that follows. In this new edition the Green's function is explained, reinforcing the integration of quantum mechanics with classical physics.

IE Irodov books questions in General Physics includes the most advanced level of questions that really examine your basics, thinking ability and subject level maturity. In IE Irodov PDF has been presented questions in such a way that students will face no problem what so always in understanding till the core of concepts despite their understanding level. IE Irodov has left no stone unturned to cover all the chapters without any error. It holds good conceptual questions with a variety covering every concept. Explaining IE Irodov Physics problems requires a clear understanding of Physics questions and is very time-consuming. Hence, JEE students are advised to read this solution only in their free time. The book doesn't contain detailed Chapter 23 Mechanical Oscillations Solutions to the questions, which might be frustrating to students.

In physics , sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave , through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. In human physiology and psychology , sound is the reception of such waves and their perception by the brain. Different animal species have varying hearing ranges. Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration , sound, ultrasound, and infrasound. A scientist who works in the field of acoustics is an acoustician , while someone working in the field of acoustical engineering may be called an acoustical engineer.

Harmonic Oscillation. Oscillators are the basic building blocks of waves. We begin by discussing the harmonic oscillator. We will identify the general principles.

Seismology: Surface Waves and Earth Oscillations

Methods in Computational Physics, Volume Seismology: Surface Waves and Earth Oscillations is a five-chapter text that deals with the computational analysis of surface waves and the eigenvibrations of the Earth. Chapter 1 describes the advances in the numerical modeling of geological structures where the appropriate partial differential equations with boundary conditions for heterogeneous materials are solved using an intricate finite difference scheme. Chapter 2 presents the computer techniques of processing seismograms to obtain information on the dispersion of seismic surface waves, while Chapter 3 explains the fast algorithms for computation of eigenvalues in surface wave and terrestrial eigenvibration problems.
