Cocoa butter equivalent CBE formulation, especially the compatibility of palm oil based CBE with cocoa butter, is of special interest to chocolate manufacturers. Traditionally palm oil is fractionated to obtain high-melting stearin and olein with a clear point of around 25 C, the latter serving as cooking oil. Recently, palm oil has been fractionated to recover an intermediate fraction known as palm mid-fraction PMF , which is suitable for CBE formulations. Generally, production of PMF is based on a three-step procedure. However, a dry fractionation system, which includes selective crystallization and removal of liquid olein by means of a hydraulic press, has been developed. A direct relationship between yield, quality of PMF and crystallization temperature during fractionation has been achieved.
The sources of hydrocarbons in crude palm kernel oil were investigated by a series of laboratory-controlled oil extractions of kernels of varying quality. Site examinations of palm kernel-crushing plants were also conducted to determine possible sources of hydrocarbon contamination of palm kernels throughout the process of kernel extraction. Parallel to these studies, a random survey of crude palm kernel oil CPKO produced by different kernel crushers was also carried out to determine the range of hydrocarbon concentrations in locally produced CPKO. This study showed that hydrocarbons can be picked up from sources such as glassware, extracting apparatus, and plastic containers and stoppers. Extraction of oil from low-quality kernels that were both moldy and rancid, broken kernels, and kernels plus added shells also resulted in a higher hydrocarbon level in the final CPKO.

Conventional criteria for mature harvest are still used for determining production targets. These criteria are also used as a basis for developing mechanized and digitalized harvesting technologies. This research was conducted to determine the optimum harvest FFB maturity criteria based on the number of loose fruit from bunches before harvesting, related to the yield, quality, and chemical characteristics of CPO and PKO. Samples used were Tenera type FFBs with the variety of maturity including unripe reddish black fruit , under-ripe red fruit but no loose fruit , ripe loose fruit of grains , ripe loose fruit of grains , and overripe loose fruit of grains. The riper fruit, free fatty acid content and peroxide value of CPO increased. It was also the same for carotene content and deterioration of the bleachability index DOBI but the value of both decreased in overripe fruit.
Traditionary extracted palm oil and palm kernel oil were obtained from Elaets guineensis Jacquin. Both oils have been used in the South Eastern Nigeria for the treatment of various diseases and skin infections. Five microorganisms namely; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger known to cause some infections treatable with these oils were investigated. The results showed that there was no inhibition on the five microorganisms by dura and tenera varieties of Elacis guineensis when tested individually. When the mixed extracts were tested, only Escherichia coli was minimally inhibited. Several factors are known to affect mechanical oil expression from oilseeds. In this study, the influence of kernel moisture content KMC , kernel heating temperature KHT , kernel heating duration KHD and kernel particle size KPS on palm kernel oil PKO yield by a mixed variety of oil-palm kernels using a locally fabricated screw press was investigated. The one-factor-at-a-time OFAT experimental approach was employed. Design-Expert 8P Version 8. Oil-palm kernels should not be crushed when using a screw press designed for whole kernels, because, doing so will most likely result to poor oil yield.
