The purpose of this paper is first, to discuss the theoretical assumptions, qualities, problems and myopia of the dominating quantitative and qualitative approaches; second, to describe the methodological lessons that the authors learned while conducting a series of longitudinal studies on the use and usefulness of a specialized balanced scorecard; and third, to encourage researchers to actually use multiple methods and sources of data to address the very many accounting phenomena that are not fully understood. This paper is an opinion piece based on the authors' experience conducting a series of longitudinal mixed method studies. The authors suggest that in many studies, using a mixed method approach provides the best opportunity for addressing research questions.

The series is designed to expand the toolbox of methods used to evaluate and refine PCMH models. The PCMH is a primary care approach that aims to improve quality, cost, and patient and provider experience. PCMH models emphasize patient-centered, comprehensive, coordinated, accessible care, and a systematic focus on quality and safety.

Quantitative approaches to research include hard numbers and provable results, such as experiments and surveys. Qualitative research is more subjective, often including observation and interpretation of data via ethnography and personal interviews. Recent approaches to research design include using both qualitative and quantitative research -- a mixed-methodology research design. There are some advantages and disadvantages to this approach. Most mixed-methodology research begins with a qualitative observation of an event or phenomenon. Qualitative study offers the opportunity to provide subtle details that outline a problem. The research then uses a quantitative tool, like a survey, to validate or invalidate observations made during the qualitative phase.

Lessons learned: advantages and disadvantages of mixed method research

Although I talked about many benefits of mixed methods in my previous blog there are also many limitations as well. In this blog I will explain some of the more prominent disadvantages as well as writing a short list of disadvantages to sum it all up. One of the main disadvantages of this design is that when you quantitize qualitative data it loses its flexibility and depth, which is one of the main advantages of qualitative research.

Mixed methods research is a methodology for conducting research that involves collecting, analysing and integrating quantitative e. This approach to research is used when this integration provides a better understanding of the research problem than either of each alone. Quantitative data includes close-ended information such as that found to measure attitudes e.
