I show that the text, rather paradoxically, feeds upon the contemporary nostalgic drive at the same time as it critically deconstructs nostalgic versions of Englishness which transform the past into a politically correct global commodity. The article ends with an examination of the vision of Englishness offered in the final section of the novel as a possible compromise resolving, at least partially, these paradoxes. It indeed seems that the author alerts his readers to the necessity of being aware of the inevitably constructed nature of any version of English identity, and to the attendant importance of choosing the values underlying these constructions.
The word was coined by the ambitious Swiss student Johannes Hofer in his medical dissertation in Nostalgia and progress are like Jekyll and Hyde: doubles and mirror images of one another. The dataset for study 4 is not publicly available because participants were not so instructed. What helps consumers extract the greatest happiness from their experiences? The current investigation is the first to introduce to the consumer literature the construct of anticipatory nostalgia, defined as missing aspects of the present before they vanish in the future. While personal nostalgia involves fond memories and longing for what has already been lost, anticipatory nostalgia involves missing what has not yet been lost. Specifically, mediated by anxiety, anticipatory nostalgia decreased enjoyment and positive affect in pleasant situations, but it enhanced enjoyment and affect in unpleasant circumstances. Study 4 extended the paradigm to a real-life setting and showed that the impact of anticipatory nostalgia on enjoyment and meaningfulness can last as long as 8 h after the manipulation.

Nostalgia is a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. Nostalgia is associated with a yearning for the past, its personalities, possibilities, and events, especially the "good old days" or a "warm childhood". The scientific literature on nostalgia usually refers to nostalgia regarding the personal life and has mainly studied the effects of nostalgia induced during the studies. Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through the amygdala , the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of one's past are usually important events, people one cares about, and places where one has spent time.
Not so much an ancient passion as a pseudo-classical creation of the early modern world, nostalgia was, Svetlana Boym informs us, first diagnosed among the various displaced persons of the seventeenth century: Swiss mercenaries soldiering abroad; domestic servants working in France and Germany; freedom-loving students from Berne, studying in Basel. As cure, Hofer prescribed opium, leeches and a return to the Alps. It was not until the eighteenth century that poets and philosophers seized nostalgia from the medical men. For the Romantics, the symptoms became a sign of sensibility, or of newly minted patriotic feeling. The restoration of is the crucial one here. Born in Leningrad, Boym left for the US in and was told at the Soviet border that she would never be able to return. Nostalgia catches up with her when she returns to Russia in , but what moves her is not the smell of frying cutlets or the grey drizzle over the Neva.

Nostalgia is thought to play an important role in psychological resilience. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown involvement of memory and reward systems in such experiences. However, it remains unclear how these two systems are collaboratively involved with nostalgia experiences.
