We all think we know about education as being the one imparted in schools around the country. This system of education, devised by the government and based upon a curriculum is called the formal system of education. However, in most countries, there is also an informal system of education that is totally different from school education and has nothing to do with the strict curriculum and other obligations found in formal education.

Education is a gradual process which brings positive changes in human life and behavior. It facilitates us to investigate our own considerations and thoughts and makes it ready to express it in various shapes.

Every learning and development team has one ultimate goal. They want to ensure every member of the organization is given every opportunity available to train. Formal and informal learning are two opposing learning styles. One is pragmatic and organized.

Education (formal, non-formal, informal)

The European guidelines identify the educational process in any activity undertaken by people, in the various stages of life, in order to improve their knowledge, skills and competences , from a personal, civic, social and occupational point of view, in a formal, non-formal or informal way. Therefore, forms of education can be distinguished according to the level of organisation and structure, conditions in which learning takes place, functionality and applicability of knowledge, skills and attitudes and level of certification of learning outcomes. Formal learning refers to what takes place in the education and training system of a country. It is official, structured, organised by public organisations or recognised private institutions and results with formal certification and formal level of qualification which is recognised by relevant national educational authorities. Formal education is usually organised as full — time education and is organised as a continuous process with defined stages. Formal education encompasses primary, lower and upper secondary education, higher and university education that culminate in the achievement of a degree or a professional qualification or diploma or a recognised certification as well as adult education programmes.

Informal learning is any learning that is not formal learning or non-formal learning , such as self-directed learning or learning from experience. Informal learning is organized differently than formal and non-formal learning because it has no set objective in terms of learning outcomes and is never intentional from the learner's standpoint. For all learners this includes heuristic language building, socialization, enculturation, and play. Informal learning is a pervasive ongoing phenomenon of learning via participation or learning via knowledge creation, in contrast with the traditional view of teacher-centered learning via knowledge acquisition. The term is often conflated, however, with non-formal learning, and self-directed learning. It is widely used in the context of corporate training and education in relation to return on investment ROI , or return on learning ROL.

Informal learning

Pedagogical approaches that encourage learners to become civically involved emphasize the active components of learning: discovery, reflective observation, trial and error, and growing with challenges or collaboration. These experiences, in turn, need to be connected by means of a consciously designed learning process. It typically leads to validation and certification [2] ". What most people connect with learning or education is learning in a school or an institution of higher education. They are less organized and structured than either formal or non-formal education. Informal learning may include learning activities that occur in the family, in the work place, in the local community, and in daily life, on a self-directed, family-directed or socially-directed basis" [3].

It typically leads to certification. Formal education is an organized education model which is structured and systematic. This model presents rather a rigid curriculum that corresponds to laws and norms. This means that there are students, teachers and institutions involved. Schools and universities use this method to teach their students. Formal education institutions are administratively, physically and curricularly organized and require from students a minimum classroom attendance. In formal education teachers and students have to observe, this involves intermediate and final assessments in order to advance students to the next learning stage.

FORMAL AND NON FORMAL EDUCATION IN DESIGN EDUCATION

Educational systems exist to promote formal learning , which follows a syllabus and is intentional in the sense that learning is the goal of all the activities learners engage in. Learning outcomes are measured by tests and other forms of assessment. Adult migrants engage in formal learning when they take a course in the language of their host community. If the course is based on an analysis of their needs, it will follow a syllabus that specifies the communicative repertoire to be achieved by successful learners.
