How to Do a Discourse Analysis

Discourse analysis is sometimes defined as the analysis of language 'beyond the sentence'. This contrasts with types of analysis more typical of modern linguistics, which are chiefly concerned with the study of grammar: the study of smaller bits of language, such as sounds phonetics and phonology , parts of words morphology , meaning semantics , and the order of words in sentences syntax. Discourse analysts study larger chunks of language as they flow together. Some discourse analysts consider the larger discourse context in order to understand how it affects the meaning of the sentence. For example, Charles Fillmore points out that two sentences taken together as a single discourse can have meanings different from each one taken separately. To illustrate, he asks you to imagine two independent signs at a swimming pool: "Please use the toilet, not the pool," says one.

By Jan Ifversen As a historian by training I was not taught to work with texts and textual analysis, but with documents and source criticism. Although historians do place documents within communicative contexts, they are primarily treated as monuments of past voices. Source criticism is not really concerned with establishing how texts produced meaning, but rather with answering questions about who said what and why. Save to Library. Create Alert.

Discourse analysis is a useful tool for studying the political meanings that inform written and spoken text. In other posts, I have provided a quick video introduction to the topic, and have discussed the ideas behind discourse theory , the main questions that students and researchers will likely ask as they set up their discourse analysis project , and the things that are worth keeping in mind when working with East Asian language sources. In this post, I offer a handy set of tools for doing a text-based, qualitative discourse analysis. You can go through the whole list of work-steps and tick each item off in turn, which is a good way to practice these methods. However, if you are conducting a specific research project, I would recommend adapting this toolbox to your own needs and tailoring it to fit your concerns. At the end of this post, you will also find a few comments on the limitations of this toolbox plus a list of literature that you can turn to if you want to learn more. So you have formulated a research question, have collected source material, and are now ready to roll up your sleeves and dig into your sources.

Discourse analysis: A useful methodology for health-care system researches

Discourse analysis DA , or discourse studies , is an approach to the analysis of written, vocal, or sign language use, or any significant semiotic event. The objects of discourse analysis discourse , writing, conversation, communicative event are variously defined in terms of coherent sequences of sentences , propositions , speech , or turns-at-talk. Contrary to much of traditional linguistics, discourse analysts not only study language use 'beyond the sentence boundary' but also prefer to analyze 'naturally occurring' language use, not invented examples. Discourse analysis has been taken up in a variety of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences , including linguistics , education, sociology , anthropology , social work , cognitive psychology , social psychology , area studies , cultural studies , international relations , human geography , environmental science , communication studies , biblical studies , public relations and translation studies , each of which is subject to its own assumptions, dimensions of analysis, and methodologies. The ancient Greeks among others had much to say on discourse; however, there is ongoing discussion about whether Austria-born Leo Spitzer 's Stilstudien Style Studies of the earliest example of discourse analysis DA.

R Iran. Discourse analysis DA is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry and becoming an increasingly popular research strategy for researchers in various disciplines which has been little employed by health-care researchers. The methodology involves a focus on the sociocultural and political context in which text and talk occur. DA adds a linguistic approach to an understanding of the relationship between language and ideology, exploring the way in which theories of reality and relations of power are encoded in such aspects as the syntax, style, and rhetorical devices used in texts. DA is a useful and productive qualitative methodology but has been underutilized within health-care system research. Without a clear understanding of discourse theory and DA it is difficult to comprehend important research findings and impossible to use DA as a research strategy.

The focus is on the presumed direct hit of events on bodies and on what is sensed rather than known. This formulation in combination with the need for new methods has disconnected discourse studies from research on affect. In common with other recent critics, I argue that the formulation of affect as an excess is unsustainable. I focus here, however, on the methodological consequences. The objective of affect research is to produce textured, lively analyses of multiple modes of engagement and to understand the working of power through patterns of assemblage.
