Cognitive emotional behavioral therapy CEBT is an extended version of cognitive behavioral therapy CBT aimed at helping individuals to evaluate the basis of their emotional distress and thus reduce the need for associated dysfunctional coping behaviors e. This psychotherapeutic intervention draws on a range of models and techniques including dialectical behavior therapy DBT , mindfulness meditation , acceptance and commitment therapy ACT , and experiential exercises. CEBT has been used primarily with individuals suffering from eating disorders, as it offers an alternative when standard CBT is unsuccessful in relieving symptoms. Although CEBT was initially developed to help individuals suffering from eating disorders , its effectiveness in helping people to better understand and manage their emotions has meant that it is increasingly being used by psychologists as a 'pretreatment'  to prepare patients for the process of therapy for a range of problems including anxiety , depression , obsessive compulsive disorder OCD , and post traumatic stress disorder PTSD , which can often be emotionally challenging. Cognitive behavioral therapy CBT is a psycho-social intervention   that aims to improve mental health. Originally, it was designed to treat depression , but its uses have been expanded to include treatment of a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety. CBT is based on the combination of the basic principles from behavioral and cognitive psychology. Instead, CBT is a "problem-focused" and "action-oriented" form of therapy, meaning it is used to treat specific problems related to a diagnosed mental disorder. The therapist's role is to assist the client in finding and practicing effective strategies to address the identified goals and decrease symptoms of the disorder.

Cognitive Therapy is based on the premise that what we think affects our emotions, what we choose to do or avoid, and our physiological reactions. See Diagram A. In fact, most situations remain neutral until we assign meaning based on how we interpret the situation. Generally, we are not aware of the connection between our thoughts and emotions because the situation is so absorbing. Even if we are aware of our thoughts we seldom stop to question if they are accurate.
