What is International Relations?

In the past several decades, multinational corporations have come to generate revenue that exceeds the GDP of multiple nations, allowing these organizations to exert remarkable influence over international politics. Technological innovation and the proliferation of social media have further connected global audiences in ways that were before impossible. And, the advent of the hour news cycle has made it possible to know what is happening virtually anywhere, in near real-time. Now, more than ever, corporations and governments are seeking to hire individuals—skilled international relations and diplomacy professionals—who can help them meet the demands of this shift towards globalization. If you are considering this type of career in international relations, diplomacy, or global studies , you may be wondering whether or not you need an international relations degree to advance your career.

Diplomacy as practiced by foreign services and foreign ministries has seemed in recent years to be in decline. Governments in the post-collectivist age have wielded few economising axes more deeply than in respect of the management of their overseas representation. The urge to save increasingly hard won tax revenue was backed up by the sense that foreign services needed modernising - which tended also to mean minimising. This notion had been present before the real force of the anti-collectivist gale had developed.

5 Reasons to Study International Relations and Diplomacy

Edited by Stephen McGlinchey. Diplomacy has probably existed for as long as civilization has. The easiest way to understand it is to start by seeing it as a system of structured communication between two or more parties. Records of regular contact via envoys travelling between neighboring civilizations date back at least years.

These structural, economic and political developments in the global economy go a long way to explaining the expansion of commercial diplomacy activities by nations. On the one hand, nations use commercial diplomacy to expand trade and investment in the context of declining economic policy sovereignty. The creation of the WTO in led to an extension of the rules and regulations of international trade and trade-related matters including the financial services industry.

International relations is the study of the interaction of nation-states and non-governmental organizations in fields such as politics, economics, and security. Professionals work in academia, government, and non-profits to understand and develop cooperative exchanges between nations that benefit commerce, security, quality of life, and the environment. Our richly connected, complex world demands professionals skilled in international relations, an exciting field of study that presents a globally oriented perspective on issues that transcend national boundaries. The study and practice of international relations is interdisciplinary in nature, blending the fields of economics, history, and political science to examine topics such as human rights, global poverty, the environment, economics, globalization, security, global ethics, and the political environment. Exceptional economic integration, unprecedented threats to peace and security, and an international focus on human rights and environmental protection all speak to the complexity of international relations in the twenty-first century.

Diplomacy , the established method of influencing the decisions and behaviour of foreign governments and peoples through dialogue , negotiation , and other measures short of war or violence. Modern diplomatic practices are a product of the post- Renaissance European state system. Historically, diplomacy meant the conduct of official usually bilateral relations between sovereign states. By the 20th century, however, the diplomatic practices pioneered in Europe had been adopted throughout the world, and diplomacy had expanded to cover summit meetings and other international conferences, parliamentary diplomacy, the international activities of supranational and subnational entities, unofficial diplomacy by nongovernmental elements, and the work of international civil servants. Later it applied to all solemn documents issued by chancelleries, especially those containing agreements between sovereigns. Diplomacy later became identified with international relations , and the direct tie to documents lapsed except in diplomatics , which is the science of authenticating old official documents. This article discusses the nature of diplomacy, its history, and the ways in which modern diplomacy is conducted, including the selection and training of diplomats and the organization of diplomatic bodies.

Global Diplomacy
