Jerry Spiegel and Lucien Y. Over the course of the twentieth century, growing recognition of the environmental and public health impacts associated with anthropogenic activities discussed in the chapter Environmental Health Hazards has prompted the development and application of methods and technologies to reduce the effects of pollution. In this context, governments have adopted regulatory and other policy measures discussed in the chapter Environmental Policy to minimize negative effects and ensure that environmental quality standards are achieved. The objective of this chapter is to provide an orientation to the methods that are applied to control and prevent environmental pollution. The basic principles followed for eliminating negative impacts on the quality of water, air or land will be introduced; the shifting emphasis from control to prevention will be considered; and the limitations of building solutions for individual environmental media will be examined. It is not enough, for example, to protect air by removing trace metals from a flue gas only to transfer these contaminants to land through improper solid waste management practices. Integrated multimedia solutions are required.

Indiana University Environmental Health and Safety IUEHS has developed this Program to establish standard procedures for safe, environmentally sound and compliant management of wastes generated on any IU campus in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations. This Program applies to all faculty and staff of Indiana University that participate in any activity that results in a general refuse product of any kind, including but not limited to laboratory research, maintenance, grounds keeping, and academic instruction. The objectives of this Program are to protect human health and the environment in compliance with all government regulations by preventing the release of contaminants through sound, best management practices for waste generation, handling and disposal. Readers will find an overview of waste regulations and information about waste minimization and recycling, IU waste collection programs, disposal of specific waste streams, the handling chemical spills and more.

All industries produce waste products that unless treated or mitigated in some way will be harmful to the human or natural environment. These waste products will generally need to be identified according to the industrial process in question, neutralized or rendered less harmful and finally disposed of into the surrounding land, air or watercourses. It is therefore of vital importance to every environmental, pollution or plant manager or engineer that these processes be fully understood and implemented or the cost to either the company or the environment can be catastrophic. With increasing government regulation of pollution, as well as willingness to levy punitive fines for transgressions, and the ever-present financial imperative to carry out these activities in the most efficient and cost-effective manner it is the responsibility of the professionals in question to ensure that they have the most up-to-date information available at their disposal. This book provides not only that, but the only available methodology for identifying which waste types are produced from which industrial processes, and how they can be treated.

The Handbook of Air Pollution Prevention and Control provides a concise overview of the latest technologies for managing industrial air pollution in petrochemical, oil and gas, and allied industries. Detailed material on equipment selection, sizing, and troubleshooting operations is provided along with practical design methodology. Unique to this volume are discussions and information on energy-efficient technologies and approaches to implementing environmental cost accounting measures.
