Cognitive appraisal also called simply 'appraisal' is the subjective interpretation made by an individual to stimuli in the environment. It is a component in a variety of theories relating to stress , mental health , coping , and emotion. It is most notably used in the transactional model of stress and coping, introduced in a publication by Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. In this theory, cognitive appraisal is defined as the way in which an individual responds to and interprets stressors in life. A variety of mental disorders have been observed as having abnormal patterns of cognitive appraisal in those affected by the disorder.

The transactional model of stress and coping

The model "Theory of Cognitive Appraisal" was proposed by Lazarus and Folkman in and it explained the mental process which influence of the stressors. According to Richard Lazarus, stress is a two-way process; it involves the production of stressors by the environment, and the response of an individual subjected to these stressors. His conception regarding stress led to the theory of cognitive appraisal. Lazarus stated that cognitive appraisal occurs when a person considers two major factors that majorly contribute in his response to stress. These two factors include:. In general, cognitive appraisal is divided into two types or stages: primary and secondary appraisal. See also: Schachter-Singer Theory of Emotion.

Their effectiveness depends on the type of stressor, the particular individual, and the circumstances. For example, if you think about the way your friends deal with stressors like exams, you will see a range of different coping responses. Some people will pace around or tell you how worried they are, others will revise, or pester their teachers for clues.

Stress Management

Stress has been defined traditionally either as a stimulus , often referred to as a stressor , that happens to the person such as a laboratory shock or loss of a job, or as a response characterized by physiological arousal and negative affect, especially anxiety. In his book, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process Lazarus, , Richard Lazarus defined stress as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised as personally significant and as taxing or exceeding resources for coping. Stress and coping theory provides a framework that is useful for formulating and testing hypotheses about the stress process and its relation to physical and mental health. The framework emphasizes the importance of two processes, appraisal and coping, as mediators of the ongoing relationship between the person and the environment.

Viste el anillo.

One way of improving our relationship with stress is to understand some of the processes which underpin it, and how they influence the ways we try and cope.
